Dr. Hisham Taha Abdulla El – Dossouky (NWFP-EUT, Peshawar) and Dr. Hisham Ettouney (College of Engineering and Petroleum, Kuwait University
They are being awarded for their research in economical technologies in sea water desalination. They explore both conventional and non-conventional desalination processes, focusing on performance enhancement, energy conservation, and cost reduction.

Dr. Hisham El-Dessouky is Professor of Chemical Engineering since September 2004 at the NWFP-EUT, Peshawar.He received his doctorate from Hanover University, West Germany, in 1981. and B.Sc. and M.Sc. from Cairo University, Egypt.
His research interests are in desalination, energy storage, evaporative cooling, heat transfer, and heat exchanger design and membrane separation.
El-Dessouky is known worldwide in the water desalination field. He has published and presented more than 150 papers in international refereed journals and conferences. He is the main author of the first textbook on desalination fundamentals published by Elsvier,2002.
He has received many international and national awards including the state award for engineering, Egyptian Academy for Scienc (2002), distinguished research award, Association of Arab Universities (2002), distinguished research award, College of Engineering and Petroleum, Kuwait University (1999/2000), and the distinguished research award, Kuwait University (1999/2000).
He is an associate editor of the Journal of Heat Transfer Engineering, International Journal of Nuclear Desalination, and Member of the International Advisory Board of the Power Plant Chemistry Journal.
Dr. Hisham Ettouney is a Professor of Chemical Engineering, College of Engineering and Petroleum, Kuwait University, since 1988.
He also served as an assistant professor of chemical engineering at the chemical engineering departments in King Saud University, Saudi Arabia, and the University of New Hampshire, USA.
He received his P.hD. in Chemical Engineering from MIT, USA in 1983 and B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from Cairo University, Egypt in 1975.
His teaching experience includes several courses on undergraduate and graduate levels: desalination, unit operations, mass transfer, transport phenomena, reactor design, membrane technology, and wastewater treatment.
His research is in the areas of desalination, energy storage, evaporative cooling, and membrane separation. He has published more than 80 papers in these fields. he also has 50 presentations in international conferences. He is the co-author of the textbook on fundamentals of seawater desalination, Elsevier, 2002.
Other activities include supervision of M.Sc. and Ph.D. thesis studies, conducting sponsored research, field consultation, instructing intensive training courses for engineers and technicians, review of research articles and projects, and departmental committee duties.

I extend my thanks to the prize committee, the Prince Sultan Center for Environment, Water, and Desert, and the King Saud University. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate my colleagues on their receipt of this high honor.
I am truly honored to receive the prize in the area of Alternative (non-traditional) Water Resources regarding economical technologies for seawater desalination. The desalination experience in the Gulf States and many other locations around the world proved that desalination of brackish or seawater can form a sustainable source of fresh water for households, agriculture, and industry.
In the late 1950’s small desalination units were commissioned on industrial scale. Such units were limited to 500 m3/d, sufficient for 2000 inhabitants. Today, the size of a single desalination unit has reached 75,000 m3/d, which is sufficient for approximately 300,000 inhabitants. The desalination industry and associated technologies have come a long way; however, more needs to be done. This is to reduce the product cost, achieve sustainability, and protect the environment. The research work performed by my colleague and I included studies of conventional and non-conventional desalination processes. The studies focused on performance enhancement, energy conservation, and cost reduction. This research has also enriched the desalination education on bothe the undergraduate and graduate levels, engineering training, and consultation to the industry.
