cest19 filmThe Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water participated as the Platinum Sponsor of the 16th International Conference on Environmental Science and Technology (CEST 2019) which was held in Rhodes, Greece from 4-7 September 2019.

The conference is organised every two years by the Global Network of Environmental Science and Technology (GlobalNEST) together with the University of the Aegean (Greece) and the South Aegean Region. CEST2019 is academically supported by the University of Salerno (Italy) and the Imperial College London (UK) as well as a group of distinguished scientists.

PSIPW has been the conference’s platinum sponsor since it’s 13th session in 2013.

cest2019 30 yearsCEST was established in 1989 and is a leading environmental conference where top experts, scientists, entrepreneurs, representatives of public administration and social initiatives present state-of-the-art research on current and emerging environmental issues. This year, CEST celebrated its 30th anniversary.

PSIPW joined in celebrating this milestone by sponsoring two of the conference’s dedicated sessions, each of which was officiated by a PSIPW prizewinner.

cest19 barcelo and falarasDamià Barceló, Professor at the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Studies in Barcelona and Director of the Catalan Institute of Water Research, PSIPW’s 2012 Water Management Prizewinner (on the right), was the plenary speaker at the conference’s opening session where he spoke about research on emerging contaminants in Europe and Saudi Arabia. He also gave the keynote address at the dedicated Emerging Contaminants session.

Polycarpos Falaras, Research Director at the National Centre for Scientific Research “Democritos”, PSIPW’s 2014 Alternative Water Resources Prizewinner (on the left), officiated the dedicated Water Treatment session. He spoke about his experiences with the Prize. 


PSIPW also participated with CEST in providing Prince Sultan Memorial Participation Grants to three recipients at the opening session.

cest19 certificateThe grants were presented at the opening session by Demetris Lekkas (far right), Scientific Coordinator and President of CEST, and an attending PSIPW official (centre) who also spoke at the session.

The distinguished researcher grant was awarded to Ricardo Antonio Torres-Palma, Professor of Chemistry at the Instituto de Quimica, Universidad de Antioquia, Columbia, who participated with “Elimination of relevant pharmaceuticals in hospital wastewater from Colombia by combination of a biological system with a sonochemical process.”

The two student grant recipients were:

Lester Lee Bayon of the University of the Philippines, who participated with “Cobalt and phosphorous recovery from semiconductor wastewater through homogeneous crystallization of cobalt phosphate in a fluidized-bed reactor.”

Amartya Pani, Doctoral Research Scholar at the Indian Institute of Technology, West Bengal (pictured above), who participated with “Changing cropping patterns and irrigation practices: Implications for promoting sustainable growth of agriculture in West Bengal, India.”
