PSIPW Participates in 50th Session of the COPUOS Scientific & Technical Subcommittee

viennafeb2013PSIPW participated in the the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) at its fiftieth session, which took place from 11 -22 February 2013 at the United Nation Office at the Vienna International Center in the Austrian capital.

This technical subcommittee meeting is held annually in Vienna every February, and PSIPW participates as an commitee member advising on the application of space technologies to water discovery, management and conservation.

PSIPW General Secretary Dr. Abdulmalek A. Al Alsheikh addressed the delegates. He introduced the cureent Prizewinners and spoke about PSIPW's recent activities.

Then he updated the committee about the joint activities being carried out by PSIPW and the United Nations.

He opened his discussion by conveying the following message from the PSIPW Council Chairman HRH Prince Khaled Bin Sultan Bin Abdulaziz to the session delegates, stressing the need to support scientific innovation to ward of the pending environmental crisis:

“Political unrest and economic degradation are the consequences when water, nutrition, energy, and the environment are threatened. When these four essentials of human life are in danger, so is the nation. Scientists and researchers have an important role to play in developing innovative and effective solutions to ward off the threat of hunger and thirst in the Arab world and beyond.”

“It is going to take effective management, international commitment, and political strength to avert the impending crisis of water scarcity. Even this will not be enough without the committed efforts of scientists and researchers to provide the innovative solutions and technology that we need. They must be given every encouragement.”

Dr. Abdulmalek A. Al Alsheikh introduced the current PSIPW prizewinners and their works to the delegates and gave an update on the Prize's recent activities. Then, the International Water Portal was addressed, which is a cooperative effort between UN COPUOS and PSIPW.

Finally, the discussion turned to the upcoming 3rd International Conference on the Use of Space Technology for Water Management that the United Nations and PSIPW are co-organising in Rabat, Morocco from 1-4 April 2014.
